Our client NIDYA (Northern Ireland Deaf Youth Association), currently have a vacancy for a Mentor Co-ordinator Worker based in Belfast.
JOB PURPOSE:
To effectively deliver NIDYA’s Mentoring Service which is accessible to all young Deaf and Hard of hearing people living in Northern Ireland. To form a team of Mentor volunteers, ensuring appropriate training and policies are in place.

• Proven experience of working with young people in challenging circumstances

5. Be able to manage flexible working patterns, including occasional unsocial hours
• Leading training courses
• Residential events
• Supervising evening visits
6. Objective and non-judgemental
7. Friendly and approachable
8. Knowledgeable about Deaf issues
9. Have strong youth work values and beliefs
Essential Qualities
1. Must have GCSE English & Maths or equivalent
2. CACDP Stage 2 British Sign Language or able to demonstrate fluent signing skills
3. Supervisory Skills – candidate must demonstrate experiences of using skills in a youth setting & supervision of volunteers
4. Demonstrating experience in working with young Deaf or Vulnerable people
5. Be able to facilitate teamwork and monitor progress
6. Assess individual progress and keep accurate, clear records
7. Clean driving licence and use of a vehicle or candidate can demonstrate appropriate alternative
8. Acceptance of NIDYA’s policies and understanding of the aims and objectives of NIDYA’s work ethos
Desirable Qualities
1. Ability to use Irish Sign Language (ISL)
2. Knowledge of computers, including word processing, database and spreadsheets
3. Basic Youth Work Qualification – OCR or similar
4. Can demonstrate long term experience and understanding of Deaf Culture & Issues
Duties.
1. To promote the Mentoring Service to the Deaf community, Social Services, Schools in order to identify people requiring a mentor and to build an effective referral database system.
2. To continually recruit, train & establish a team of Mentors to supply the current need according to agreed targets.
3. To manage the team of mentors, ensuring appropriate training and policies are in place ensuring a commitment to quality.
4. To organise meetings with appropriate professionals to gather background information before visiting young Deaf/Hard of hearing to compile written assessments of the candidate for mentoring.
5. You will be responsible for selecting and matching Mentors to their Mentees and to regularly assess how the relationship is progressing.
